5th and 6th Grade State Project

Your student is currently working on a History Project for one of our Nifty Fifty States!
Projects are due on November 3rd.

By now your student has let you know which of the choices they will pick for presentation as well as which state they have chosen. If you have not yet signed their project sheet please do so and remind them to return it to me for credit.

Projects should be completed primarily by students, however, I understand there may be some aspects your student needs help with if they have chosen a presentation with technology or one that requires a lot of sculpting. I encourage you to leave all the decisions up to them and simply lend a hand if they are struggling to get their concepts the brainstorming stage into a concrete presentation.

We are working on these projects during class time too.

Orange/Grapefruit Fundraiser

We participate in a fundraiser each year, selling oranges and grapefruits for $44/box.
These are delivered to the school and available for pick up the second week of December.

Please ask your student about this order form if they haven't showed it to you already. We are selling them as a school, however, the class that sells the most gets a pizza/ice cream/movie party!
I have also extended a class prize to the student who sells the most. They will receive a "Get Out of Homework Free" slip to be used on any assignment of their choice.

I have plenty of order forms if you fill up your first one!

The cut off date to get order forms back to me is November 20th.

Please feel free to give your friends and family my email or the school's phone number if they have any questions regarding their order.

Storybook Character Day

In lieu of Halloween (we will be in parent teacher conferences), your student is welcome to dress up, this Friday (October 27th) as their favorite character from a book.
We do ask that the character is not a witch, ghoul, zombie, etc.
It must also be modest, not revealing too much skin.

They must bring the book with them on Friday. I have stressed to each of them that if they dress up without the book they will be out of dress code and will receive a Demerit.

They are also welcome to bring a dish to represent their book. (Ex: Chronicles of Narnia: Turkish Delight)

Memory Verse Genesis 12:2-3 ESV

Genesis 12:2-3English Standard Version (ESV)

"2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

****We will be memorizing this in class together. I have not sent home a paper version. They are welcome to continue memorizing it at home. It is written on the whiteboard for them to copy down and for us to say each day. The score for this verse will be based on a verbal presentation of it.

Memory Verse Genesis 9:11-15

Genesis 9:11-15 ESV

11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Alaska Day Fun

We will be celebrating Alaska Day on the 18th of this month.

We have a whole day of fun learning planned, complete with a visit from our very own, Senator Coghill. He will be sharing about the formation of Alaska as a state from his personal experience.

We will also be taking a field trip to the Morris Thompson Cultural Center in Fairbanks. Please sign your child's permission slip and have them return it tomorrow (Tuesday the 15th).

Please allow your student to wear a plaid shirt with jeans (suspenders are also welcome). If you student does not have a plaid shirt to wear with jeans please be sure they are in proper school uniform.

Memory Verse for the Week

Genesis 6:5-8English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

We are discussing the O.T. in class and the beginning of the world.  This week's concept they will master is: Our sin effects others.

Scripture Rock

We competed as a class again this morning for the scripture rock by reciting Genesis 1:1-2 and the days of creation.

Mrs. C's homeroom worked very hard this week to say it perfectly and confidently.

This little guy is ours again for the third time! We plan on giving him a beard and some hair.

Lockdown Drills

We live in a world, unfortunately, that is dark and sometimes sinister. In order to best protect our students, we discussed and practiced our procedure for a school wide lockdown today.

We will continue to drill our students in these procedures, along with our fire drills and earthquake drills to make sure your students know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency here at school. Our TOP priority is to get your student back to you unharmed and safe in an emergent situation.

If your student seems a little more drained or nervous today after school, it could be the effect of walking through our lockdown procedures today. This is not a pleasant situation to think about or practice for, but is absolutely necessary.

Some ways you can help support them in remembering procedures and feeling more comfortable with them are:
1. Talk about it at home, both the emergency situation and procedures to be followed.
2. Create your own plan for fire safety, earthquake/natural disaster, or home intrusion to be carried out at home.
3. Encourage your student that both the school administration as well as their teachers are fully capable of taking care of them and neutralizing the threat.

I welcome any questions about our procedures and drills. Please know we follow Alaska State and Federal standards for all emergency drills and active situations.

September Newsletter

We had an exciting month! We finished up our cross country races, had our last soccer game and accomplished many new concepts in Math and History.
Mrs. C's homeroom also worked hard on their Bible Verses and won the scripture rock twice in a row!

This Month's Accomplishments:
6th-8th grade:
Memory Verse Memorization (13 verses and all the O.T. books in order)
Spelling Words (80 words with even more for Vocabulary)
Units of History Regarding Eastern and Western America and Map Mastery
Units of Math Review (Measurements -Metric and English, Factors, and Prime vs. Composite #'s)

3rd-5th grade:
Units of History Regarding Immigration and our Nation's symbols of freedom
Units of Math Review (Borrowing, Carrying, and Prime Factors)

Here are some of the highlights in pictures:

We memorized our verses by using unusual tactics like standing on our heads

We celebrated Kierra's 10th birthday

We made good use of the nice weather and played outside for recess and P.E. (Here they're playing Man Overboard)

We learned the oh-so-important Peel the Avocado song (my apologies if it's still stuck in your head)

We took a 10 min. nap on some Thursdays before plowing through our Math

We learned a parable through acting it out (Parable of the Wedding Feast)

We learned about immigration through a simulated Ellis Island. Each immigrant had to ride to America in a "ship", produce a passport, and go through screening.

I wish I could capture SO many more of our awesome learning moments for you, but here you have the ones I was able to remember to use my camera for.

If you have any pictures from activities you attend with us, please feel free to email them to me. (acoelho@npcs.org)
